How we selected products to test
Together, Erin Lee and Lam Nguyen have 47 years of stewardship experience. Erin suggests a duffel made of ballistic materials for checked baggage because they are the most resilient.
Using what we learned, we looked for duffels with the following characteristics:
- Rather than four wheels, two wheels (two-wheeled rollers can handle a variety of surfaces better than four-wheeled; spinner wheels also protrude and take up more space in overhead bins)
- An exterior made of polyester or nylon with a minimum denier count of 800 (ideally ballistic; see our “Fabric” section below)
- A D-shaped or clamshell entrance would be preferable over a slit-style aperture since they are more accessible.
- A large, efficiently ordered interior
- A balanced construction that can stand upright without toppling
- Wide-set, strong inline skate wheels
- A base grip and at least two outside handles for simple lifting and carrying

Important features to consider
Since duffel bags typically have flimsy sides, they can tear when checked at the airport. Therefore, it’s crucial to pick one that is constructed of durable fabric with a high denier count. The “D” you frequently find in fabric specifications, such as 600D, 1200D, etc., stands for denier, which is a unit of fabric weight.
The stronger the fabric is, generally speaking, the greater the denier number. The measurement, however, can only be used to compare weights within a single fabric group (for example, a 600D polyester is actually weaker than a 450D nylon, and so on).
Ballistic and Cordura nylon are the heaviest and sturdiest kind of nylon, which makes for an excellent rip-resistant, long-lasting fabric for baggage. If you’re going to get a poly duffel, search for one that is at least 800D because polyester is a less sturdy and more lightweight option.
There are two types of rolling duffel bags: two-wheeled (rollers) and four-wheeled (spinners). Each has advantages and disadvantages, and ultimately, the decision boils down to personal taste.
- In comparison to four-wheelers, wheels are often larger, recessed, and easier to move across a variety of surfaces. They can handle quick movement (like when you’re hurrying to catch your flight at the airport) without catching and can be rolled up stairs instead of having to be carried.
- They have recessed wheels that can only go forward and backward, and they take up room inside the bag.
Tip:Pick a duffel with two wheels that are spaced reasonably apart. The bag will tip more easily from side to side if they are too close together.
- Spinners can be pushed or pulled alongside or behind you while standing upright and can rotate 360 degrees. They don’t tug on the arm or shoulder.
- The wheels of a spinner are always “on,” so if you’re going up even the smallest slope, you’ll need to keep an eye on your bag. The wheels take up room in overhead bins and are more prone to damage because they aren’t recessed.
How we tested
We filled our duffel candidates with clothing, shoes, toiletries, and other travel necessities to test their capacity, compartment use, and overall packing convenience. The quality of the duffels’ wheels and telescoping handles were next tested by dragging them across various surfaces (pavement, dirt, gravel, and cobblestones), as well as up three flights of stairs.
In order to test how simple it would be to fit the carry-on duffels in an overhead compartment, we also carried them by their other handles and raised them over our heads. The duffels were then evaluated using these criteria:

Best full-size: FŪL – Tour Manager Deluxe
In the full-size category, the robust FUL – Tour Manager Deluxe was the undisputed champion. The split-level, 1680D ballistic nylon FUL features a hard-sided, water-resistant bottom and is made of incredibly strong material. Its telescoping handle stretches smoothly and steadily, and its wide-set inline skate wheels provide a stable, balanced roll. Its heavy-duty, big zippers, which are simple to grab and don’t catch, are another feature we enjoy.
Overall, packing the FUL is a pleasure. These-sized duffel bags can resemble black pits where you have to delve deep to find the one item you need. But to avoid that, the FUL is intelligently separated. Two deep compartments at either end of the bag are among the exterior pockets; one is ideal for shoes or boots, while the other is near to the telescopic handle and may be used to store snacks, tickets, and other travel essentials.
Travelers have the choice of dividing the duffel into two independent compartments or leaving it as one large compartment accessible from the top opening. The top half of the duffel is divided from the hard-sided bottom compartment by a zipped flap. The bottom compartment’s rigid walls, which remain upright and don’t collapse in on themselves, making packing particularly simple. Although the top opening of the duffel could be a little bit larger for simpler access, it is not a deal-breaker.
Best Full Size: FUL – Tour Manager Deluxe
The robust, split-level FUL makes excellent use of its roomy interior by using 1680D ballistic nylon, which is extremely durable.
The mesh “window” in the middle of the bag’s separating flap is one feature that we felt was needless and disappointing for such a well-designed bag. It would be far more durable to divide the top and bottom compartments with a strong, windowless flap. In order to put the flap out of the way when unzipped, we also wish there was a strap or pocket.
When empty, the FUL weighs 10 pounds, which makes it somewhat heavier (the Olympia – Drop Bottom Rolling Duffel weighs about 6.5 pounds). It is worth the weight, though, especially considering that a comparably sized suitcase typically weighs approximately 12 pounds, provided the duffel’s durable ballistic nylon and solid construction can hold their own on the tarmac. The F-L can stand upright when packed, although during testing it did tip over around one third of the time.
- With 1680D ballistic nylon, heavy-duty zippers, and wide-set, sturdy wheels that move smoothly, the FUL – Tour Manager Deluxe is constructed robustly but solidly.
- With a dedicated pocket for shoes and an inside divider flap that divides the bag into two spacious compartments, it is well-organized to make the most of its interior capacity.
- A hard-sided bottom on the FUL’s clamshell form prevents it from simply collapsing in on itself while packing.
Best carry on: eBags – TLS Mother Lode Mini
The eBags – TLS Mother Lode Mini has an intuitive design and is packed with thoughtful features, making it the ideal carry-on bag. The duffel’s exterior is solidly built and well-designed; no matter how full we packed it, it stood upright and did not topple over (the bag even comes with optional interior rods that can be quickly installed to increase upright support). With its substantial, corner-set inline skate wheels, the duffel rolls easily and tips only occasionally.
Four outside handles on the Mother Lode Mini made it simple to hoist horizontally, which is necessary for fitting a carry-on in the overhead bin of an airplane. Travelers of different heights may easily draw the bag because of its telescoping handle, which expands to three different heights (and kids, too).
We valued the bag’s detachable strap for putting additional luggage on top of it as well as the ID badge stowed safely inside a clear mesh pocket. Even its zipper pulls are uniquely created and ergonomically made for the curves of the thumb and forefinger.

The easy-to-use Mother Lode Mini is a smooth-rolling carry-on that is jam-packed with essential features.
The clamshell duffel’s two sections are divided inside by a zipped flap: a soft upper compartment that can also be accessible from the bag’s top entrance and a bottom portion with hard sides. The top compartment has compression straps that may be used for both the bag’s one-compartment and two-compartment variants, while the bottom half has an optional Velcroed divider. The bag has outside compression straps in addition to an expandable design.
The duffel’s top opening is frustratingly small and congested, much like the FUL – Tour Manager Deluxe. This is especially true when the inner partition flap is undone, leaving one big interior compartment. The Mother Lode Mini may only have this one flaw, but since the bag works best with its two compartments segregated in the first place, it’s hardly a deal-breaker. The soft top compartment has a hard-sided section that prevents it from extending further, but it also protects and further stabilizes the bag’s bottom.
Instead of 840D and 900D twisted poly, nylon would be the material of choice for the Mother Lode Mini in an ideal world. But for a carry-on duffle, polyester with those denier counts is more than tough enough.
- Expandable inside compartment dividers, an ID tag, and even ergonomic zipper pulls are just a few of the wonderful features and benefits that the eBags – TLS Mother Lode Mini is packed with.
- Due to a hard-sided bottom half that reaches one-third of the way up the front of the bag, the duffel stands up very well on its own. For added stability, the bag also comes with optional inside rods that may be attached.
- In order to prevent tipping, this duffel bag has huge, comfortable inline skate wheels placed at each corner.
Other duffel bags we tested
Olympia – Drop Bottom Rolling Duffel
The Olympia – Drop Bottom Rolling Duffel is a totally acceptable inexpensive option because of its lower price. The Olympia is lighter, has a wider top opening for better visibility, and is well-built for the money even though its 1500D polyester pales in compared to the FL’s robust 1680D ballistic nylon. Even though they aren’t as wide-set and sturdy as the F- L’s, its inline skate wheels fared admirably in our tests.
A. Saks – Expandable Wheeled Duffel
The A. Saks – Expandable Wheeled Duffel, made of 420D nylon, is constructed similarly to a conventional soft-sided duffel, with foldable sides and no hard bottom. Although its telescopic handle is a good couple of inches shorter than the eBags duffel, it rolls well. On its end, the A. Saks doesn’t hold up well. We enjoy the bag’s expanded design and extra plush carrying handle.
The bottom line
The FUL duffel impressed us with its exceptional build and incredibly tough ballistic nylon fabric. The needless mesh window in the bag’s inside partition flap wasn’t our favorite, but it wasn’t a deal-breaker either. We had no doubt that the eBags – TLS Mother Lode Mini was the greatest rolling carry-on duffle bag.
